This is the city in North eastern state of Uttar Pradesh. The name to the city was given by Mughal Emperor in 1583. The “Alah” in the name is associated with the Din-Ilahi which was the religion founded by Akbar. The modern city has been renamed and is now popularly known as “Prayag” because of the famous Kumb Melas organized here. It is one of the four sites of kumbh Mela. The others are Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. It has important position in the Hindu religion and mythology as it is the situated at the meeting place of Ganga and Yamuna. Hindus believed that invisible Saraswati also flows into it. This belief has originated because the Sarawati River dried up as it was diverted to the eastwards in Yamuna. This city is also the reference point for Indian Standard Time because solar events in Allahabad occur exactly 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Time as is maintained by the city’s observatory.
It is also home of Moti Lal Nehru Institute of Technology. This place is a historical paradise since history lied embedded in its fields, monuments and temples. About 58 km northwest lies the medieval site of kara with the wreckage of historical Jayachand’s fort.Sringverpur another ancient town is discovered recently which has become a very major attraction for the tourists and antiqurian’s alike.
Prayag is an extremely important and integral part of the Ganga Yamuna Doab. Its history is tied with the Doab right from its inception. The Doab region was captured by a number of emperors and dynasties for a longer time. It also became the part of Gupta and Muraya rulers. The land of Allahabad district that falls between the Ganga and Yamuna is just like the rest of Doab fertile. It is suitable for the cultivation of wheat.
An important part of the Ganga Yamuna Doaba region, it is the last point of the Yamuna river and is the Indian west’s last frontier.Allahabad has historical memories like Akbar Fort. It has an Ashokan pillar and some temples. It is a large military barrack. On the southwestern side of Prayag lies Khusrobagh that antedates the fort. It has three mausoleums including that of Shah Begum who was Jehangir’s first wife. Allahabad stands at a strategic point both geographically and culturally.
The Ardh kumbh mela and Kumbh mela are held at this place. However, Magh mela is held every year in the month of magh. Ardh kumbh mela is held after a gap of six years. In Allahabad these religious fairs take place at the Sangam which happens to the meeting place of sacred rivers.
During eclipse, people from all walks of life gather to take a dip in the holy river. Hindus believe that a bathing in the holy river during eclipse purifies a person from the sins and the bad effects that have been inflicted by the rays. Most of the people who have made important contribution in the work of art and literature have been associated to this place. The list of such people is endless. There are various literary works like novels, books and literature which is very useful for the students of Hindi and music. Firaq and Harivansh Rai Bachachan were the great products of Allahabad University. Presently it is a city with all developed amenities. The municipal corporations governed by the government bodies play a very important role in developing and maintaining good infrastructure. The transport system is very developed. The rail and roads link to various important cities in the country.
