Chennai now known as Madras is situated on the east coast of Southern India. It is situated near the shores of Bay of Bengal. It is the fourth largest metropolitan cities and 35th largest metropolitan of the world. Its name was officially changed in 1996; however the old name is still widely used.It has a population of 6 million people. East India Company developed it as a major trade center. Its architecture is influenced by the Dravidian and Gothic architecture in its building. Though the city has grown but it has not lost its charm and grace. It is still vibrant city which is still expanding.The infrastructure of this place is very developed. Accommodation and transportation are cheap and efficient.
The religion has left its mark on this city. It is believed to be the place of St. Thomas. This city has number of churches that are connected with the historical events. There are number of ancient temples and two are within the city.
One temple in Triplicane and another in Mylapore are magnificent. The 4.5 km long Golden Marina beach is one of the longest beaches in the world. Music, dance and all other art forms attract great patronage and it is influenced by the South. It is the epitome of tradition, culture and life style of Southern India. But like the rest of the country, it has developed its share of urban style and modernity.
There are various places of tourism. One enchanting landscape known as Kodaikanal is a trekker’s delight and paradise. It is popularly known as kodai. It is situated at the 2133m from the sea level among the Palani Hills.
It is the only hill station which was set up by Americans in India. Later it was joined by British. A school for the education of European children was established in 1845 by Americans. Kodaikanal International School is one of the most prestigious private schools in India. Unique to the Westen Ghats, the ‘Kurinji’ shrub is found in plenty.
This is a place to escape from the heat and haze of the plains. Another great attraction is Shembaganur Museum which is devoted to the archeological remains and flora and fauna of the hills. It is maintained by the Sacred Heart College. It has one of the best orchid collections in the country. It is situated at a distance of six kms from Kodai. Silver Casade is the name of the waterfall which is situated at the 8km from Kodai on the Kodai-Madurai Ghat road. It falls from a height of 180 feet. The fall is formed by the overflow from Kodai Lake
Another great attraction is Kurinji Andavar Temple which is located three km from the lake. It is small shrine dedicated to Lord Subramanyu. From this temple you can get a view of Palani and Vaigai Dam. The star attraction of Kodaikanal is the star shaped Kodai Lake that is beautifully landscaped. Boats can be hired from the Kodaikanal Boat and Rowing Club. The tourist department also has rowboats and pedal boats. Situated 7km from Kodai is the Pillar Rock, three boulders standing vertically to a height of 120m. The Pillar rock is full of caves and chasms, a delight for the adventure seeker. Chennai has good transport system. It is well connected by air to most cities in South East Asia and the Middle East. It is also connected to major aviation hubs in American and European countries.
