Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal. It lies in the eastern part of the river Hoogly. It is the fourth largest city of the India. It is the economic and cultural hub center with lots of trade. It is famous as “City of Processions” and “The City of Joy”. It is the birth place of Rabindernath Tagore and Mother Teresa. Noted director Satayajit Ray was born on this place. He has given Indian cinema a great contribution. Public Transport in Kolkata is provided by Trams, Kolkata Metro, buses, Auto Rickshaws, Cycle Rickshaws and taxis. For long distance travel, Kolkata has two railway stations, Howrah Station and Sealdah and one airport, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport at Dum Dum. Kolkata is a major hub for the Information Technology. Real estate, financial consultancies, travels and tourism and hotel industry are some other services that contribute to its economy.

It houses Calcutta Stock Exchange, which is second largest stock exchange in India. Kolkata is home to many industrial units operated by large Indian corporations with products ranging from electronics to jute. Some notable companies headquartered this place. It was the capital of the British Raj in 1911. It was called Calcutta previously.Kolkata The name Calcutta and Kolkata are probably drawn from kalikata, the name of three villages which exists before the arrival of British. It has grown as cultural hub center with lot of economic activity. There are lots of place in kolkata which have shown the evidences of its role in pre-independence struggle. Lots of processions, rallies and assemblies were held in this city to motivate people to get the freedom.

Once the important center for modern education, science and trade, it has witnessed stagnant growth during pre independence period.This place has faced the revolutions for a long time. The people of this place have great liking for various sports like cricket and football. Their interest in other activities includes the art, music and literature. Calcutta has long been known as a center of art and literature. The drama and music have always been very important for the people of this city. Lots of theatres are still prevalent. Kolkata is a place where you can find lots of places of great interest. It was the gateway of India until 1912.

It is the place where various top industries have established their trade. Once India's leading city and Capital,Kolkata Kolkata experienced a steady economic decline in the years following India's independence due to the prevalent unstabilised political condition and rise in trade-unionism supported by left-wing parties. Between the 1960s to the mid 1990s, flight of capital was enormous as many large factories were closed or downsized and businesses relocated. The lack of capital and resources coupled with a worldwide glut in demand.

This place has witnessed various ups and downs in the trade, though the telecommunications have contributed a lot to the development of this state. The architecture of this place is influenced by various things. There are lots of beautiful colonial buildings and heritage structures. Established in 1814, the Indian Museum is the oldest museum in Asia and houses vast collection of Indian natural history and Indian art. The Victoria Memorial, one of the major tourist attractions in Kolkata, has a museum documenting the city's history. Other important buildings in Kolkata are Belvedere Estate, Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Marble Palace, National Library of India, Raj Bhavan.
