It is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. It is located in what was historically called Awadh. It has courtly manners, beautiful gardens. Chikan work is very popular. There are special markets where Chikan clothes are sold. The artists of this place have a rich culture and they have contributed a lot in the work of embroidery. It is the administrative headquarter of Lucknow District and Lucknow Division. It is one of the most important centers of Muslim cultural influences in South Asia. Lucknow nawabs are very popular for their contribution of poems among South Asians. It has population of 2,541,101 according to 2006 survey. It is situated in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, 500 km from south east of New Delhi. It is a great place with lots of places of historical interest. Its medieval history begins with its elevation to a capital city under the Nawabs of Awadh.

The architecture used in buildings and monuments was great. The Awadh rulers contributed a lot by constructing many mosques and palaces. Numerous paintings can be found which depict ancient events and they now stood in Art gallery. The famous monuments include Roomi Darwaza, Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara which present a great work of art.Lucknow IT industry and biotechnology are the two focus areas which have contributed to the development of the economy. A bio- tech Park is going to be set up by Ministry of Science and Technology. It is one of the selected cities for the Smart City project. Chikan and Zardozi industry are the major small scale industries in this city. Kite making which reached a high level of artisary during the period of nawabs is still a major small scale industry.

The major industries of Uttar Pradesh are sugarcane industries and sugarcane plantations. This has prompted Mohan Meakin Brewery to set up a brewery based on molasses in the city. The Lucknow is upcoming metros with hall marks of cultural extravaganza. It is known for its splendors. This is a city with magical charm and that charm is never dieing. Be it the cultural charm or the monumental one, all is well conserved in Lucknow as it is called “The City of Splendors”. For shoppers, it is not only Hazratganj or Aminabad but something more which provides good stuff.Lucknow However, recently the market culture has been taken over by the mall culture which means everything under single roof.

Aminabad, with its twisted lanes, is the main shopping centre, though Hazratganj, with its theatres, coffee houses, restaurants, hotels and bars has attracted tourists since long.
