Ludhiana is the largest city of Punjab in India. It has a population of around 3.5 million. It is situated in the Ludhiana District on the banks of river Sutlej. It is centrally located on the Grand Trunk road from Delhi to Amritsar. It is well connected to Indian cities by rail, road and air. Ludhiana is also called Manchester of India because it is the industrial hub of Punjab. There are 8 large integrated knitwear factories, roughly 6,000 small to medium sized knitwear factories, 10 big hosiery yarn mills and 150 small- to medium-sized worsted and woollen yarns. There are also firms manufacturing bicycles and motorcycle parts, machine tools, sewing machines, generators, diesel engines, tires & tubes, and other consumer goods. The export market in Ludhiana is very large. Hero Cycle is the largest cycle manufacturer in the world. Various small parts are manufactured in various households. People of this city are very innovative and there are many small units where even children and women help in production.

Besides this, Ludhiana is also the exporter of hosiery products to the Russia. Ludhiana is notable for its' famous markets such as the Chaura bazar, Ghumar mandi, Model town market, Kochhar market, Sarabha nagar market. People of other states especially come to this city to buy hosiery products which are available at resonable rates. LudhianaWith regard to the infrastructure Ludhiana has developed roads. There is an upcoming airport.A new 25 world commercial center is still under construction in the heart of Ludhiana. It will provide space for shopping, entertainment, business and other amenities. About a dozen new shopping malls cum entertainment centres are under construction including MBD Mall Plaza and a Reliance venture.

There are various tourist places which are very popular such as Tiger Safari, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, and the Rural Museum at PAU, The Rose Garden, Hardy World, Water Park and Dream Land. There are many good Hotels and Restaurants. There are also a large number of places to eat out. It basically highlights the Ludhianis' passion for good food.Ludhiana There are also many religious and historical places in and around Ludhiana. Sikh religious sites in the district include Gurudwara Alamgir, Nanaksar Kaleran, Raikot and Macchiwara. Local private schools are considered the best in the State, with Kundan Vidya Mandir which was established in 1942 being one of the oldest and most reputed schools in Punjab.

It has the most experienced faculty responsible for producing some of the best academic and sports performers in the state. Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar topping the list of overall quality education centers with D.A.V public school topping the list in academics. Ludhiana is home to the largest agricultural university in Asia. The College of veterinary Sciences at PAU has recently been upgraded to the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University. Apart from it Guru Nanak Dev Engineering college is the top 19th engineering college of India. It provides quality education in the fields of civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, IT, electronics and production engineering. The people of Ludhiana are basically Punjabis. Being very populated city, there is lot of pollution and congestation. The infrastructure need to be more development. There are proposed plans to build new colonies as more and more land on the outskirts of the city is captured and the same has been alloted for the residential sites.
