Shimla is known as queen of hills. It is situated in Himachal Pradesh. This is a place of immense beauty. Various big and small hills, rich vegetation constituting of pine trees and snake curved roads have added the beauty of this place.Shimla came into existence in 1819. It was originally a thickly populated spot which was famous for the temple of goddess ‘Shyamala’. It was first discovered by the British officers who found its climate very good and refreshing. They started using it as their summer capital and this was followed by the further development. Some of the old buildings which were once used by the British are Bentinck castle and Auckland house. It was during Lord William Bentinck’s time that Shimla was truly acquired by the Government of India.Ridge which is one of the liveliest places in Shimla is always full of activity. Situated on the Ridge is Christ Church, which is the second oldest church in Northern India. It is a great place with majestic appearance and there are stained glass windows inside it which represent faith, hope, charity and patience.
Shopping center of Shimla is known as “The Mall”. It is a place where one can find unique collections of wooden articles like key rings, spatulas, show pieces and pens. The mirror and beads are fixed on these articles to make them beautiful. This place has also many restaurants, club, banks, post offices and tourist offices. This place is always hub with activity with people walking up and down the Mall slowly, stopping to gossip. Two main meeting points at the Mall are The Ridge and Scandal point. Gaiety theatre is another attraction here. Another amazing spot which also has religious importance is Jakhu Hill. It is the peak which presents a very beautiful view of the whole town. An old temple of Lord Hanuman is situated at this place. Lots of monkeys in playful moods are always found in this place.
Shimla Museum is also another popular place. It was opened in1974. The vast collection of objects in this museum relate to the art, archaeology and cultural anthropology of Himachal and other states of India. 9000 objects are currently found in its collection.
Various art galleries in this museum pertain to Pre-historic, Indian Archaeology, photographs, Rajasthan paintings, Bronzes, Arms gallery, Gandhi gallery and wall painting gallery. India Institute of advanced studies is very popular in Shimla. This institute is housed in the Viceregal Lodge. Students find its calm and serene atmosphere very suitable for studying. Its beauty is enriched by the spacious gardens and pine trees.
At a distance of 13 kms, Hotel Wildflower Hall of the HPTDC gives a very magnificent view of the Himalayas and perennial snows. Charming in summer and fascinating in autumn, the mantle of snow gives a very fascinating ethereal look.There is another lovely town which is situated at the distance of 5 kms from Shimla. This is Summer Hill. Himachal Pradesh University is situated here.Kufri is well known for their ski slope that is located at a distance of 16 kms. It has a mini zoo where a rare breed of wild animals and pheasants species which are commonly found in Himalayan forest region have been kept in natural habitat. It is spread over an area of twenty hectares of land with rich flora. It has a Potato Research Station.
